The "Black Box" Delusion

Many people think that drawing a black rectangle over text in a PDF editor is "redaction." It isn't. In many cases, the text still exists underneath the box, and a savvy recipient can simply copy and paste it out into a notepad.

True Redaction vs. Visual Overlays

True redaction requires the software to physically remove the text and image data from the underlying byte stream of the PDF.

How to Redact Locally

Using the LumioPDFRedact Tool, you can select sensitive areas. Our engine then uses a "Zero-Trust" approach, processing the file in your browser to ensure the data is stripped out and replaced with blank space or black pixels before the file is re-generated.

Common items to redact:

  • Social Security Numbers (SSNs)
  • Private bank account details
  • Customer PII in discovery documents
